iphone sounds cool and all, but when i look at whats really going on compared to other smartphones, i just dont see what the hype is about

the problems i have that people seem to gloss over that are pretty important to cellphones today

Text messaging: No keypad, so everything is done on the screen. The demos do not show this. Other than phonecalls(and maybe not for many users), text messaging is the singular most used than any other feature.

Touchscreen: This is not a flip phone, and generally you do not find cellphone cases with screen protectors for non-flip phones. That means what when you're talking on the phone, all that grease and sweat is getting all over the screen, which will hamper touchscreen capabilities. On top of that, touchscreens suffer wear and tear fairly easily and the entire capability of the system is through the touch screen. On the chance that you get a screen protector, that will definately interact someway with the touch screen.

Internet: iphone only supports EDGE network, which is fairly slow. In the demonstrations, they are using the built in WiFi to access the videos and such online at a much faster pace. The phone boasts youtube integration(mobile flash player, something you can get from adobe for a windows phone), but it will take 5-15minutes to load a youtube clip or surf though mapping software using the EDGE network. So when you don't have access to wifi(on the road, say, which is where you would use it the most), you are less off than many newer(cheaper) 3G phones like the blackberry pearl, blackjack, moto q, etc. The wifi is a nice touch, but other smartphones support it as well and its not a revolutionary feature. In this case, it seems almost like its there to make the tech demonstrations go much faster than they should.

Cost: Costs as much as a PS3. Nuff said. As far as them being able to artifically markup the ipod compared to other players and have it be successful(to use a common comparison in the news), the problem with the mp3 player market is that when ipod jumped in there were no major brands pushing it. Creative was the only decent namebrand, and they aren't big by any means. The marketing campaign totally annihilated the competition because the competitors couldnt afford it. The cellphone market is drastically different and is dominated by brands with giant pockets, so they cant be marketed out of it just by saturation of ads.

No hardware MP3 support?: There are reports that the technical reference only mentions AAC for hardware support(ie it has its own sound processor for it). Which would mean that any mp3 support would be software based and utilize much more CPU(and battery) for it. This would drastically slow the device down while in use.

So where does this leave us? A 600$ phone with a lot of cons that really don't need to be there and are counterintuitive to modern cellphone use, particularly in the touchscreen and text messaging.

I wanted it till I saw the price tag.

Plus I never buy first gen.

Price will drop in 6 months, and bugs will be worked out. Then I'll get my iphone.

Don't hold your breath. Apple's unlikely to come down on the price anytime in the foreseeable future.

Blegh. Can't afford it, don't really care for Apple stuff, don't own an IPod, HATE Cingular only slightly less than I despise Verizon, and need a "smart phone" like I need a hole in my head.

So yeah, totally uninterested.

I use sprint and not really interested in iPhone, so screw it. Waiting till I can trade in my Katana for a discount on an upgrade then goinf to get a phone running Windows Mobile. A real internet browser comes in handy when working 12 hour shifts. >_>

considering the pricing of other apple products, i dont know if that will happen. the ipod, macbook, etc do not drop in price much, and they are routinely refreshed and the older models are phased out quickly to keep a high pricepoint.

the other thing is that the lower prices cingular and such offer on more expensive phones are usually subsidized by manufacturer rebates to offset the cost to the wireless carrier and i dont believe that is a practice that apple will participate in, which will hamper pricing

I am not.

I have a cingular branded 8125 phone. I don't use it for anything more than texting and as a phone anyways.

besides I don't like the look of it.

Apple is actually getting a cut of all new contracts that are generated for cingular with the purchase of the I-phone.

Talking my research analyst at work, he expects a price drop in the I-phone by christmas, because the clones will be out by then and apple will have to drop the price a little bit at least to stay truly competitive.

I like all in one devices, it wont be out in Oz for a fair bit so I can sit back and see how it works out before deciding.

We are soooo lucky here in Oz how we get to sit and wait to see how things work out, sometimes for several years just to be sure. Bet you're all jealous.

I have the Cingular 8125, and it's nice. Then again, I like it for the full keyboard for TTY and texting.

But the browsing is nice, etc.

i tried opera mini for the first today and it is definately an interesting spin on mobile webbrowsing. it runs through java and basically opera houses a server that looks up the webpage and it streams your phone the images of it. its much more robust than most mobile webbrowsers, but the only downside is that as its running essentially a remote connection, there is little to no capability for plugins/extensions to the webbrowser. something to try though, especially for people with crappy webbrowsers on their phone but java capability

The iPhone is very cool. I'm having lots of fun noodling around with it. I didn't realize it also had a digital camera built in. Here are some shots:

Noodled around with it at the Apple store. It's nice.

Apple makes $250 margin on each (unlike PS3, which Sony loses money on). Price will come down as it gets commoditized. Apple surely will offer a Nano version in a few years.

It's made a big splash. There's no denying.

Note that Razrs were $500 initially as well.
